William E. “Bill” James, 92, of Gassaway passed away December 9, 2018 at home, with family and his beloved dog “SugarBear” at his side.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnett James; father, Orvin Ransom James; his mother, Mary Fraser; his two brothers, Orvin and Charles; and sister, Mary Lou.

Bill will be deeply missed by his two children, Denise and George, both of Gassaway; his two grandchildren, Joshua and Amy of New Port Richey, Florida; and his two great-grandchildren, Katherine (Katie) and Brett also from Florida.  Additionally his many good friends and church family will greatly miss his friendship and smiling face.

Bill graduated from Gassaway High School in 1946 with his high school sweetheart and wife of 69 years, Garnett.  Bill served in the Marine Corp and was stationed in Miami and Puerto Rico.  Bill and Garnett bought their first home in Gassaway and remained in the same home for all of their married life.  After leaving the service Bill was hired on to the B & O Railroad as a fireman.  He retired from the railroad working as a brakeman and conductor.  Bill loved to cook and anyone who ate his pies would attest, he was a good cook.  Bill loved to volunteer to cook for local fund raisers, church events, and was a fixture at the Gassaway Days breakfast for many years.  In 2008 he was recognized as Gassaway’s Citizen of the Year for his community volunteer work.

The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to our wonderful neighbor, Linda Simmons Cain, for her help and many thoughtful meals during Bill’s illness.  The support of the WV Caring nurses and staff and the Braxton County Seniors Nursing for their kind care and thoughtfulness was most appreciated.
