Rodney G. “Biggin’ ” Nutter, 80, of Gassaway, passed away March 25, 2019 at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 16, 1938 in Clay County, a son of the late Joseph Dale and Iva Jane Workman Nutter.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Triplett Nutter; three brothers and four sisters.

Following his family tradition Rodney worked at the Swandale sawmill where he sawed the last log when the mill shut down.  This led him and his family to Braxton County where he worked at Coastal lumber in Frametown. From there he worked as a heavy equipment operator on the construction of I-79. He finished out his career at Juliana Coal on the strip mines at Erbacon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman with turkey hunting being his favorite.  In his retirement he loved antique trading and tinkering with old bicycles. He liked creative writing where he signed his work as “Arthur Unknown”. He was a gardener, canner and cook.  He enjoyed eating ramps and poke greens, and anything set in front of him.  He loved making people laugh and was the ever-present family clown. He planned and hosted a family Christmas dinner for extended family and close friends for many years. He embraced technology and liked watching YouTube.  For many years Rodney was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Sugar Creek Baptist Church where he helped baptize many converts. Rodney was saved and baptized in 1967. He lived a full and happy life and will be missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Fox Nutter; son, Rocky Nutter and partner, Chuck Halstead; daughters, Vicki Parsons and husband, Mike, Melda Brown and husband, Eddie; brothers, Jennings Nutter and wife, Barbara, Joe Nutter and wife, Brenda; sister, Eva Crigger and husband, Bennie; granddaughter, Mary Lynne Hamric; special niece, Shelly Cottrill and husband, Dennis; great nephew, Tyler Cottrill; special friends, Nathan Clark and John Allen; hunting and fishing buddy, Alfred Blankenship; fur babies, Sammy and Lucy.
