Essie’s life will be remembered with a funeral service beginning 1p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Marco Pritt officiating. Interment will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Saturday. Essie Bessie (Miller) Jarrell, 99, of Gassaway, WV passed away quietly, surrounded by her loving family on October 3, 2017 at the Clay Health Care Center, Ivydale, WV, after an extended stay.

She was born February 26, 1918 on Horse Creek in Raleigh County, WV. She was the last surviving child of the late Joseph and Lydia Miller’s 17 children.

She is predeceased by her devoted husband of 63 years, Clarence Edward “Ed” Jarrell ; infant son, Edward Lee and teenage son, Joe Eddie Jarrell; nine brothers; Howard, Albert, Charles, Clayton, Sid, Gene, Alvin, Woody, and twin brother Don Miller; seven sisters; Mattie, Elsie, Nannie, and Minerva Miller, Bertie (Sid) Jarrell, Mae (Braden) Morris, and Sarah (Walter) Williams.

Left to cherish Essie’s memory are her loving children; Bonnie (Jerry) Hopkins and Dennis (Starla) Jarrell and Sherryl (Martin) Wayne all of Gassaway, Diana (Roger) Hall of Duck, Darlynda (Donnie) Conley of Burnsville; eleven grandchildren; Leslea Kessler of Rutland, VT, Lora (Peter) Schaefle of Ashville, NC, Eddie Hopkins, Duck, Allison Shortall, Milton, FL, Christopher (Ashley) Shortall, New Bern, NC, Roger (Denise) Hall, Jr., Stow, OH, Ryan (Ange) Prince, Burnsville, Robyn Prince, Sutton, Stephanie (J.D.) Messenger, Mt. Hope and Melody Jarrell and Amanda (Jamie)Gumm of Gassaway; 17 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Also left to treasure Essie’s memory are a number of nieces and nephew, whom she loved very much and many foster children that she and her husband, Ed, cared for over many years.

Essie was a precious gift to all who knew her. She gave her love freely and abundantly. She was always willing to pass on her wisdom to all who came to her in need. Spending time with her family was the thing she loved most in life. She was a member of the Engel Chapel Community Church of Gassaway where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, touching the lives of countless children. She loved going to church and serving the Lord. She loved to sew and cook and you would never leave her house hungry. She also loved gardening and canning what she raised in her garden.

Thanks go out to the many family and friends who have visited Essie over the years and a special thanks to the staff at Clay Health Care Center for the love, care, and respect they have shown our mother over the last six years. And we will always remember and appreciate the recent support of Hospice.
